Dear Sun,
We are all human beings.

No, you don't speak for me as a man. No siree.
If that's a man I don't want to be one.
It's just another copy of "Waste of Trees Magazine".

Re: the relationship between England and France.

There isn't even "entente", so it can't be "amicale."

It is right to forgive

It is right to forgive.
I know it in my head.
And I even know it in my heart too.
It is 100% right for me to be forgiven for what I have done.
I don't say that anyone has to forgive me, I just say that I believe it is right to.

What am I doing here?
I don't know and I have never known.

The real thieves.

"When the funds for public services dry up, the right instinctively looks downward for places to save cash. The Tories are pledging a crackdown on disability-benefit recipients, and the abolition of services for the poor like SureStart centres and Educational Maintenance Allowances. Refugees are rarely far behind: remember, David Cameron wrote the last Tory manifesto, which committed to end the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees founded in the wake of the Holocaust."

"....if every single disability benefit claimant and every single refugee was a fraud, they would still be ripping us off for less than the super-rich."

"If the super-rich paid their taxes as the rest of us are required to, we could increase every pension by nearly 50 percent, or treble spending on primary schools. (You can read some of my suggestions for how to make them do this on our blog.) We are always hearing about the tiny number of dishonest disability and refugee claimants, but hardly anything about this far larger scandal."

Johann Hari. (With my emphases).

Excellent article once again:

Internationalism

"When confronted with a conflict between the interests of your country and those of another, patriotism, by definition, demands that you should choose those of your own.
Internationalism, by contrast, means choosing the option which delivers most good or least harm to people, regardless of where they live."

George Monbiot.

Great Quotes

Cowardice asks the question, “Is it safe?” Expediency asks the question, “Is it politic?.” Vanity asks the question, “Is it popular?.” But, conscience asks the question, “Is it right?.” And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one’s conscience tells one that it is right.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

No man treats a car as foolishly as he treats another human being. When the car will not go, he does not attribute its annoying behaviour to sin; he does not say ‘you are a wicked motorcar and I shall not give you any more petroleum until you go'. He attempts to find out what is wrong and to set it right.
Bertrand Russell.

Human behaviour has reasons, not causes.
Szasz.

If you ask me human behaviour has reasons and "unreasons" too.
But never causes.....
I mean that people can act irrationally but irrational behaviour is not "caused"
it has "reasons" too...
???
More to follow....

Fake War?

Watching all the recent coverage of the "war" in Afghanistan especially with regard to Prince Harry, I once again get the feeling that we are not watching a real war, the same feeling as with the Gulf "War" of 1991.
The mysterious "Terry Taliban" as the Prince called them seem to be expendable phantasms.
We saw clips of Harry firing a gigantic machine gun, and the voiceover said that this was the Prince in combat.
Was anyone firing back at him at the same time? Didn't seem like it.
What was he firing at? He didn't seem to know.
What warranted such massive firepower? Did he know?

Also was it safe to film him close up?The whole thing seemed like an adventure holiday.
We also saw him directing in air strikes as if it was a computer game.
We then saw great pains taken over disarming a mine as penniless civilians staggered by looking at the odd men in green garb.
All very odd, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Excellent article in the Independent on Sunday by a veteran about the utter lunacy of this war.

Great article - "The Myth of the Anti-Psychotic"

http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/adam_james/2008/03/myth_of_the_antipsychotic.html

This article is great.
Still steers clear of my rather "rationalist" point that perhaps there cannot be an "anti-psychotic" drug because no drug can in and of itself change the content of someone's thought.

As I grew up

As I grew up I understood exactly the English view of the world and at the same time saw how profoundly mistaken it is.
I was regarded as feckless and lazy when I simply could not relate to the society I was in.
In my time in the Lower Sixth form I remember thinking that basically the Anglo-American world was destroying everything of any value in the world.
2 years later the Gulf "War" happened and the victory parade was on my birthday.
